These champagne or sparkling wine bottles are mouth blown and dates from between 1840 and 1880. Weighing in at over 2 pounds each, all but one are standard 12 inches tall with small bubbles in the glass. It has the classic light swirl up the neck of a hand or mouth blown bottle with a high pontil that is pushed up measuring over two inches.

Some bottles were mouth blown into a mold as evidenced by seams on each side that runs underneath the lips which was applied on afterwards. They are still a mouth blown bottles which is quite clear from the swirls and pattern on the outside and the dating of the bottle but they use the mold to blow it into two ensure that it had a more uniform shape. A few of the others have a more freeform shape because they were not blown into mold but rather mouth blown with an attempt to make the shape as regular as possible. These bottles are a bit older. The ring at the top of the bottles that was hand applied after the bottles was blown was used to wire a cork in place because the bottle when used for champagne or sparkling wine was under pressure.

It is important to remember that wine bottles of this age were used over and over again. They were not considered a disposable item. This bottle was found in the very region where the wine it once contained is still produced. It is a Côtes du Rhône wine from the Rhône Alps region of France.
